So, clearly I haven’t updated this in a while. The spammers haven’t noticed. One recent fan had this to say, “An fascinating discussion is worth comment. I think that it’s best to write extra on this subject…” With rave reviews like that, how could we stay retired. Don’t call it a comeback, but we have recently got the band back up and running. Apart from a little more rust and a few extra pounds, we are playing as good as we ever have. We just finished a brand new 13 track album, recorded with a seven piece band. All the tracks are recorded live, over the course of a manic 24 hour session. You can hear some of our new tunes at on our facebook page. Like us while you listen!

The current exciting cast of characters is:
Billy Sharff – Vocals, Fiddle, Guitar.
Nick Charyk – Vocals, Guitar.
Jason Pappas – Bass. Jared Croteau – Drums.
Nick Heys – keys, accordion, mandoling, singing.
Jesse Barron – Keys.
Asa Brosius – pedal steel.

We will be posting more shows over the next few weeks, so keep on checking. Also, the album is for sale. You can buy it off our website. Feel free to buy it if you are curious. We would certainly appreciate it.

With love,

Nick and the gang

Courtesy of our researches at google translation, here are the two reviews from the Netherlands:

“The Utrecht postwar composer Louie Andriessen used to have a very good position: music is more important than us! I do it in this review is not about “the great …round of cleanup downloads or singer-songwriters with four guitar chords in the world wear. Central to the American company Pariah Beat with fixed values Claryk Nick (vocals, guitar), Billy Sharff (vocals, violin, guitar) and Emily East Ridge (vocals and bass). Since its founding in 2005 Pariah Beat, the band from Vermont ep 1 (“Original Sin”) and two CDs (“Pariah Beat Radio” and “Bury Me Not”) issued. The trio since 2006 more than 300 sparkling and enthusiastic performances played during the shows regularly assisted by Nick Heys Yahoo drummer and guitarist John Garrett. CD Lucinda Williams’s Car Wheels, Guitars and Cadillac by Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle Guitar Town recently made a deep impression on the trio.

One year working on the new album, Bury Me Not to the essence of these slices, the feeling and energy, capture and transfer. After many hours listening to me that they succeeded. The gentlemen and lady know trouble gypsy music, intriguing raw folk-rock and jazz to mix a contagious sound. This results in more than enjoyable songs. A plate full of flaming enthusiasm play, exciting songs, flirted with various styles and weathered vocals from singer Nick Claryk. Melancholy party music with an injection of plaintive wailing instruments like fiddle, banjo and accordion. If Shane MacGowan still find a band, then the job at singing boozer as Pariah Beat. With the energy of a punk band combined with danceable sounds namely the members of Pariah Beat on “Bury Me Not” to create a party.”

And subsequently:

“They play like they look on the inside of the hinged cover: a little sloppy. Pariah Beat Charyk consists of Nick (vocals, guitar), Billy Sharff (vocals, fiddle, guitar) and Emily East Ridge (vocals, bass) but the pictures they hang around with five persons an old caravan. There are undoubtedly some of the guests on this less than half an hour long CD with. Bury Me Not (independent) is the second CD of the band from Vermont. The title track is a bit of spaghetti western, a little cowpunky and lots Pogues. This music is perfect for a garden party drunk. Copper Mines has theatrical punky vocals and fiddles and hectic beat called Ghost Riders In The Sky. Elvis in Jerusalem is a lively affair in swing style, but strangely enough, suddenly what a neat side Pariah Beat shows. Because it leans dangerously into harmless musical-like rock and roll according to prescription of Tros and Avro. The atmosphere of Ms. saloon. Ella Strickland is somewhat too thick. More fun again with fiddles and banjo rigged Rosary Beads, which in turn completely in English folk-punk style. At Family Pet will also look horns and an accordion to pass. Available at CD Baby.”

Seven Days in Burlington VT said, “Regardless of our chosen discipline, we are all products of our influences. What matters is how we wield those influences as a reflection of ourselves. With Bury Me Not, Pariah Beat have expertly done just that.”

You can read the rest here http://7dvt.com/2011pariah-beat-bury-me-not

We also recently got reviewed in a great blog called 1-10 Country Review, and they said “If you’re getting tired of the cookie-cutter major label drivel on country radio, then here’s an independent roots band from Vermont whom you might find worth your while.”

The rest of the review is here http://1to10countryreview.blogspot.com/2011/02/from-indie-files-pariah-beat-bury-me.html

Finally, we’ve moved one step close to our long stated goal of dominating the Americana scene in the Netherlands. Check out:

We will be at Charlie Os in Montpelier tomorrow night, and at the Main St Museum on Saturday. These really are two shows not to be missed.

I will be playing hurt due to a mechanical bull riding groan pull last week sustained in Texas. I won’t get into the details, but I don’t mind mentioning that yours truly is better than an 8 second ride…

Our CD has been pressed. We got shipped the CDs without the artwork, although I imagine the artwork must be on the way. We are assuming the best and doing a series of CD release shows. We’re going to set up a few more, but here are the first three:

1. Fri January 7h at Radio Bean – Burlington VT

2. Fri January 28 at Charlie Os – Montpelier, VT

3. Sat Jan 29 at the Main St Museum – White River Jct, VT

You can get the details on our calendar.

We’re also shooting a music video for Elvis in Jerusalem, and I look forward to posting that soon. It’s a solid concept, and I promise a lot of funny dancing, a gorilla and visual puns. Hope to see a bunch of you at these shows, and please do think about buying our CD. I think you will like it, we’ve worked real hard on it.

Peace and love,

There is a lot of news that seems worth mentioning. First and foremost, I am living in Vermont again, it’s Spring and I’m feeling generally thrilled about life.

At this point, Pariah Beat is for all intents and purposes me, Em and Billy. This is either a big change, or a small one; depending on your perspective I suppose. From my perspective it’s a natural and exciting change. The three of us have a great working relationship, and we’ve done the lion’s share of keeping this band afloat from the beginning (with no disrespect intended to all of who’ve joined us along the way). I’m excited to see how the three of us do.

To that end, I owe a great deal of thanks to folks who’ve helped us move forward over the last year. Our friend Noah helped out on drums and funk influence, which we deeply appreciate. John Garret and Nick Heyes helped us play some of my favorite live shows yet. You can hear them prominently on our new record. Nick in particularl pops up in many capacities. He plays drums on all the tracks, as well as mandolin, harmonica, piano and a bunch of other misc. shit throughout. John and Nick have decided to do other things with their lives. I’m deeply appreciative of the time spent with them.

More recently, our friends Megan and Byrn helped us play some shows down south, which was a rousing success. Please check them out if you haven’t already, they are simply spectacular.

Moving forward, Em, Billy and I will be continuing to do what we’ve always done – put on the best, most entertaining, ramshackle, rafter-raising live shows we can. For now, we will be joined by two very cool friends of ours – Jared on drums, and Zach on guitar and go-go dancing. We’re looking forward to a banging summer.

Finally, our new album will be out this summer. I’ve posted some preview tracks, please share them with your friends.

That’s a lot of information to get through, so I’ll pause for now. Please spread the word that we’re up and running again. As always, please hang out with us at our next show, and of course, thank you, thank you, thank you.

I feel very lucky for the last three years of playing with Em and Billy, I look forward to the next three to thirty.
With love,
Nick

Howdy,
I wanted to check in and make sure any one who’s planning on coming to Providence tomorrow know the info, it looks like we never posted it (we’re a bit out of the routine).
You can find directions and stuff here:
http://www.providencerollerderby.com/

The bouts called Rink of Fire, and we’ll be playing at half time.

Also, I wanted to let people know what’s going on with the band. We fell apart a bit this summer, which is why we haven’t been playing shows. Suffice to say, Justin and James aren’t playing with us anymore. It’s too bad, we had a good run together. The reasons are complicated, I’d be happy to talk
about it with anyone in person.

I know a lot of people think of us as a group, and it will be weird to see us without everyone. It will be weird for me too, but we’ve been doing this long enough that it would be weirder for me to stop, or go by a different name, so Pariah Beat will continue. I’ve missed playing, and I’m excited to start again.

I’d hope folks will give us a chance doing something a bit new. From my perspective, we’re continuing to do what we’ve always tried to, playing good, exciting, smart and passionate music.

We’ve got a slew of sweet shows this fall, and there will be more, so keep checking. Also, will be playing new songs, so that’s something to check out as well. As a group, we’re feeling re-fired up, and I’m excited to
share that with all of you.

Finally, a big thank you in advance to folks who come out to the next few shows. Having things as a band disintegrate a bit has left a bad taste in my mouth, and I’m looking forward to exorcising those feelings.

Lots of love, and we’ll see you soon.
Nick and Pariah Beat
